Questions for Ron Paul Supporters
From the article: “OpEdNews is seeing a lot of new visits from Ron Paul supporters and a growing number of our old-timers are supporting him too. At the same time, Paul’s extreme libertarian positions raise great concern among progressives– for good reason. Here are some questions I’d like to have answers to.”
Here is my response:
You asked, I’m responding…
1-If paul does NOT win the primary, and does not run as an independent, will you support a democrat or republican, if there is no third party candidate? Please state whether, before the Paul phenomenon, you were D or R.
It’s unrealistic to think that there would be no third party candidate. However, I would write in before I vote for the other Republicrats.
Having said that, the only other Republicrat candidate I even remotely agree with is Kuccinich, and that’s only because he had the wherewithal to vote against the USA Patriot Act and the Iraq war. He seems to take the bill of rights very seriously, unlike the rest of the goons running for office (except, of course Ron Paul).
Gad I think I’d leave the country if Ron Paul doesn’t make it in the primaries.
2- Do you support Paul’s opposition to social security?
Absolutely. Our Congress should be ashamed of itself the way they’ve dipped into that fund over most of the last century. They have proven over and over again that central management of anything ends up in failure, no matter how noble the cause. It’s criminal the fact that our federal government has taken so much from the people and now they have nothing to show for it. Let Americans have the option to manage their own retirements, thank you very much. I’ve wanted out of social security for decades, personally.
Not to mention that David Walker, the Comptroller Generale of the GAO has taken his campaign to the people, begging them to listen (since Congress is not) that we need to drastically reform social security otherwise we are heading to financial ruin. As he says, “the numbers just don’t add up.”
Paul’s solution is the best. Pay out what we owe to people who are dependent on the system and scrap it for the younger generation.
3-Do you support Paul’s opposition to the UN?
I have to admit that I don’t know much about the UN. I’m not sure if it does any good at all. I think the UN may pass all of the resolutions it likes, but if we are to go to war against another country (in other words, move our troops into harms way on foreign soil), then we need to have a true declaration of war from the Congress.
4- Do you believe that Paul’s position on abortion is anti-women’s rights?
This is a sticky issue. There are clear rights to the mother, in other words, I feel bad forcing a mother to carry an unwanted child. On the flip side, the fetus has a right to life. I don’t know how to balance this, but I would want to follow the constitution on this one. Paul may be right that RvW is wrong, but I have to admit I’m not sure.
Personally, I hate this issue. It rises to the forefront, brings out the worst in people, and it detracts from other, much more urgent problems we face like a fiat currency, ridiculous national debt and run away spending. Even RP himself admits that this issue, for him, is back-burner material, something he wouldn’t even address in his first term. His top priority is reining in the American Imperialist Military and fixing our broken currency.
5- Do you believe it is important to have a strong democratic congress to balance Paul’s extreme libertarian positions?
I believe that each member of congress should take the oath he/she swears to protect and follow the constitution seriously. Each member should read each word of every piece of legislation, understand it, and then balance it against the constitution. If our congress does this, it would be balanced just fine against a Paul administration.
In order to implement big spending, big taxes and big social programs, Congress must ignore the Constitution. This is the sole reason we are in trouble and people are so digusted with politics–it’s the big lie that the Consitution is somehow optional. I believe all public servants should be held to the highest law of the land, no exceptions. If we insist, as a people, on this from our elected leaders, we would have an excellent balance and we would be promoting freedom and liberty. Anything else brings us back into facism.
