Questions for Ron Paul Supporters

From the article: “OpEdNews is seeing a lot of new visits from Ron Paul supporters and a growing number of our old-timers are supporting him too. At the same time, Paul’s extreme libertarian positions raise great concern among progressives– for good reason. Here are some questions I’d like to have answers to.”

Private Health Insurers Ripping Off Public

“Even rich Americans often get poor health care under the existing arrangement, says one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the health care delivery system — which fails to deliver to about 50-million people at all.”

I don’t agree with the idea of a single-payer system–but the point is interesting that even rich Americans get poor health care. I blame the problem on collusion between big insurance and government.

Why some random soldier in Iraq is writing you a letter…

This is a well written letter from an anonymous American officer serving in Iraq. Here are some highlights:

Iraqis (and most middle-easterners in general) are used to having a dictator. The cultures of that region have a long history of authoritarian rule. Iraq had a dictator before Saddam Hussein, and they will likely resort to a dictatorship when we leave. They don’t care about democracy, they just want peace. (This is not my conclusion, those are the words of the Iraqis I’ve talked to during my time here.) And the truest assessment that nearly all politicians, generals, diplomats and bureaucrats agree on is:

You cannot find a military solution to a diplomatic/political problem.

Beware the Pitfalls of Creative Mortgages…Or How I might Lose My Home

Stephanie Moore. in her article about Creative Mortgages, writes, “This is a story about how easy it is to get into serious trouble … even when you know better.” She just had to have her dream home, but didn’t have the money nor the long term income to back it up.

She suffered some really bad stuff (I mean, her cat was having chemo treatments on top of everything!), but she admits that she brought most of it on herself. I like that–responsibility for self. I don’t think we need new laws to stop all bad things–people just need to have a little common sense. She was in a rush to have a too much home without the income to back it up.

I know I’ve engaged in stuff that was “too good to be true” and gotten burned. And her tone suggests that she wants all of us to learn from her lesson. Anyway, excellent article! Buyer beware!

I do have to point something out to you. According to Thomas.gov, you voted Yea on the USA PATRIOT Act. I have to take you to task for this, because in passing this bill, you violated your oath to protect and defend the US constitution. You failed to protect our country and instead gutted the bill of rights. Not having read the bill is no excuse, as I rely on you to properly represent me.

December 13, 2007
Dear Mr. Barbieri:

Thank you for contacting me regarding impeachment. I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with me.

I certainly share your anger and frustration with the Bush Administration. My record of criticism against this Administration is extensive. From the devastating war in Iraq to the blatant attack on our civil liberties to its harmful environmental policies, I believe this Administration has taken our country in a dangerous direction.

There is no doubt in my mind that this Administration is the worst in my lifetime. However, while I have supported further study and debate of impeachment, I believe impeachment proceedings are not the best course of action at this time for two reasons:
